Save The Bees! Colony Collapse Disorder ("CCD") and What We Can Do About It
Starting in October 2006, beekeepers began to report losses of between 30% to 90% of their hives – far beyond normal colony losses expected due to winter weather. The main symptom of CCD is no or a very low number of adult honey bees, but with a live queen and no dead honey bees, in the hive. Scientists are currently conducting research into the cause of CCD, but have not yet found the definitive answer. Scientists have been focusing on three likely suspects in identifying the cause of CCD: pesticides, parasites and pathogens. While there have been developments in the research, no single cause has yet been indentifed. Bee pollination is responsible for $15 billion annually in added crop value – in California, the almond crop alone uses about 1.5 million colonies of bees to support pollination.
The number of managed honey bee colonies in the US, however, has dropped from 5 million in the 1940's to only about 2.5 million today.
Your purchase of Qualitas candles helps to support beekeepers and encourages the development of the market for honey bees and their products. We can further support honey bees and fight CCD in three (3) ways: first, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Qualitas candles is donated to ongoing research efforts to identify the causes of CCD; second, avoid the indiscriminate use of pesticides, especially at mid-day when honey bees are most likely to be out foraging for nectar; and third, plant, and encourage the planting of, good nectar sources such as red clover, foxglove, bee balm and joe-pye weed.
